Ordinary Tasmanians are trapped in the guardianship system every day. Their lives are destroyed. We see it. Every day.
There are 31 Tasmanians every week who face the prospect of having their lives taken over by a government appointed Public Guardian, Public Trustee, or both – that’s a massive 1600 applications to the Tribunal in the last year alone!
The government’s recently released Amendment Bill will simply deliver more of the same. It must be made right and minor ‘tweaking’ and rewording just doesn’t cut it. Tasmanians will still be vulnerable to losing their lives if this system continues to be the default option instead of providing proper supports to those who need some extra help and strong protections.
